Change Your Fingerprints

Yet another doctor's visit for my neck/hand. After all the blood tests and x-rays the last doctor took she basically went, "Uhh, I think it's your neck, so I'm sending you to physical therapy" so today was my first session.

I think I got a pretty good deal because they sent me to a physical therapy intern, which meant that I didn't have the $5 co-pay you normally do with our HMO plus he was young and nice (as opposed to old, crabby, and grody that doctors can be). He found the spot in my neck that hurts and when he pulled on my head ("traction") my hand actually felt a little better. So I'm supposed to rig up some homemade traction by essentially tying myself to a doorknob with a towel and rope.

So far, my job at the temp agency is proving to be the least stressful of any jobs I've ever had. Last summer the internship I had was stressful because the emphasis was on getting parts out, so anything you did to screw up them making their quota was verboten, plus my supervisor talked to my chest and when I had nothing to do I didn't even have a desk to sit at, or a chair, even. The summer before that, at the marketing company, there wasn't enough for me to do, and everything had to be done just so because, as I'm realizing, the office manager was a bit of a perfectionist.

But this job. I can spend the morning scraping labels off file cabinets and they're happy. They've run out of actual filing for me to do so my latest task is to put all the marketing materials (those brochures and pages about why the company is so great) and legal/tax forms into drawers instead of the cubbyhole thing they have going on now. Beyond that, I'm essentially supposed to organize the copy room, which is right up my alley.

I made an ice cream cake Tuesday, from Wacky cake (the oil-based chocolate cake that is almost exclusively the only chocolate cake I ever make, not counting mixes), which I used to line a little metal bowl, then Dreyer's vanilla ice cream in the middle. We brought it over to Jason's house for dinner last night and had slices of it during Wheel of Fortune. It was amazingly good! I mean, how could it have been bad? but it was better than you would expect. The cake was so soft and the ice cream denser than normal from being packed into the mold, and I don't know why, but it just combined to very, very tasty.

Last time I counted I'm 50.7% done with the quilt I'm making for my roommate's wedding, and I've drawn blood three times since I last wrote. As I progress on the quilt my quilting speed increases but so do my injuries, which maybe shouldn't be surprising. The worst, which actually didn't bleed and doesn't count on the blood tally, is that on my right thumb there's a certain point where the needle hits every time it comes through the fabric (the quickest way I've found to quilt is where my right middle finger propels the needles, my left thumb and middle finger under the quilt direct the needle through the fabric, and my right thumb feels when the needle has come back through the top of the fabric and then my middle finger'll push it back down again), and it's worn away the skin so there's this one point it hurts to have the needle touch, and that's where the needle is definitely going to touch because that's just how it works!

Sometimes I wonder if you quilt enough if you'll change your fingerprints.
