More library adventures.
Today I walked into the staff room and CuteLibraryVolunteer was there working at a computer. Usually he's out in the stacks, shelving books. But today he stayed in the staff room the whole time.
I didn't do any of my normal jobs today except for a little shredding at the end. First I did a job Chris (librarian) wanted me to do, discard these big heavy books. So I did. Who would have guessed the "Acronymns and Abbreviations Dictionary" would be in eight four inch volumes? Man, those were heavy.
Then, after that, I paper clipped stuff together for the children's librarian (Susan). It was a blue sheet, a white sheet, and a little blue sheet. Paper clip. Blue sheet, white sheet, little blue sheet, paper chip. Blue sheet, white sheet, little blue sheet, paper clip. The white sheets were numbered so I know I paper clipped exactly 188 packets of stuff. It's funny how my mind is never on my task whenever I'm doing something so boring and repetitive as my work at the library. While I was clipping stuff CuteLibraryVolunteer was working at the computer nearest the volunteer table and I kept thinking what I could say to him. Nothing. No ideas. Except, "So why do you volunteer here?" but I didn't, which is good because I think he isn't a volunteer anymore.
I saw him sign out for a break, and only employees do that. That would explain why there isn't anything more written on his volunteer time slip after the fourteenth. While he was in the staff room he was talking to another librarian (Lynn) about what it takes to be a librarian assistant versus a librarian (la's just need two years of college, librarians need a master's--what's up with that?). He has a very nice voice.
But the best part of today came when Lynn was putting the green stickers on the new GED books. CuteLibraryVolunteer asked when he could put stickers on books, and Lynn said when he finishes college. I've put stickers on books! I have done a job that someone else wants to do! I am not the bottom of the library totem pole! I am not just Trash Girl! I have worth! Well, kind of. He wants to do something I've done! ::Evil laugh::. Also, the way Lynn said "when you finish college" made it sound like he's either in or going to go to college, so he might not be the high school drop out I thought he was. He's also not apparently the idiot doing community service, so that's nice.
We'll see. Maybe I'll talk to him yet.
The offer still stands. Whoever emails me the best suggestion of how to introduce myself to him wins the prize--I'll say it. I usually see him in the staff room where we are both working on boring tasks or when he is shelving books. Keep that in mind.
I return on Monday. Maybe he'll be there then.
