August 05

Time got away from me.

First there was the trip across the country from California to Georgia with my dad. It was fun, interesting, and full of good food. There was one place in Albuquerque that had fresh tortillas with breakfast and amazing sweet rolls. Mmm.

Then there was move-in and band camp. I saw my roommate Catherine a bit at the beginning of the week, and then delved into the constant work and stresses of band camp. It was extremely hot and humid. I think it was the worst heat we've ever had for band camp. I only got a little suburned but a lot of other people were worse off. I didn't get adopted by a rat (freshman) but on the day of dwarfing (the band's initiation ritual) a rat asked me to be his pseudo-vet because his real vet, Jen, the pretty one who dates Graham, the drum major and one of my closer friends, was going to be studying for the MCATs and couldn't go dwarfing. So I went dwarfing with him, Graham, and Graham's rat.

After that school started. I went to the bookstore over five times to find all my books and spent a lot of time running away from my over-insistent ChemE stalker. The first weekend after classes had started my friend Karen came down from South Carolina, where's she working for a semester, and we celebrated my 21st birthday, which taught me I really do hate most kinds of alcohol (Karen's boyfriend, Ben, brought over some of his and I had some tastes. My word, gin is the most horrible thing ever! Who thought of that?!).

The next week of classes I continued to be on Red Level Stalker Alert and finally got my room organized. I got a really cute lamp at Ikea which I should post pictures of.

Then yesterday was the Auburn game. We left campus at 2 pm, watched an assortment of what I consider "band male" movies--ones by the Southpark guys, Quentin Tarantino, or any other ones that are some type of over-the-top gross, TMI, sick, etc. We watched "Orgazmo", and "SuperTroopers". We got to Auburn around 4:30 and parked right in front of a whole lawn of tailgaters, so I had to change modestly when we eventually got into uniform.

Then the game. We beat the pants off them! They were undefeated last year and we led them the entire game! It was really exciting, and a fantastic beginning to the season. But the Auburn fans were the worst I've ever seen. When the band went onto the field with about 4 minutes left on the game clock for halftime, the drunk frat boys started throwing things at us--empty cups, plastic bottles, one full water bottle. Whatever, they had bad aim, none hit us, the security guys were right there. They were yelling stuff at us, and besides from me having to physically restrain one trombone because he wanted to moon them (I actually thought he was going to pee on them or the hedges on the field, but he said it was just mooning, but still)--but then one guy threw two full rum and cokes on us! It got all over my roommate Kia, in one girl's eye, and on my trombone. We were mad. So mad. Luckily a police officer marched into the stands, found out who it was, and pulled him out.

But it was uncalled for. We're the band. Sure, our team was beating them, but you don't attack the band for that.

Assholes.

We got back around 4 am, even though we had police escorts the whole way back. I was able to sleep till around noon but I've still been sleepy all day. Luckily tomorrow's a holiday and I can sleep in.
